DEXA Scan Perth
Body Composition & Bone Density Assessment

Perth’s onsite DEXA body composition scan — the clinical gold standard for measuring bone density, visceral fat, lean muscle mass, and regional fat distribution. 5-minute scan with comprehensive clinically interpreted report.

What Is DEXA Scan Perth?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the clinical gold standard for body composition assessment. Using two low-energy X-ray beams at different frequencies, it precisely differentiates bone mineral content, lean muscle mass, and fat tissue — providing a level of accuracy and anatomical detail that no other body composition tool can match.

Available on-site at The Longevity Lab Perth, our DEXA service produces detailed, regionally specific data — not just an overall body fat percentage, but a precise breakdown of fat and muscle distribution across the trunk, arms, legs, and android/gynoid regions. This data is clinically interpreted and provided in a clear, actionable report.

Note: DEXA uses very low-dose X-ray — approximately equivalent to 3 hours of background radiation exposure. It is not an MRI and does involve a minimal radiation dose.

What Does It Assess?

Total body fat percentage — overall body composition

Regional fat distribution — trunk, arms, legs, android (abdominal) and gynoid (hip) regions

Visceral fat mass — the metabolically active fat surrounding internal organs

Lean muscle mass — total and regional (invaluable for sarcopaenia assessment)

Bone mineral density (BMD) — at the spine and hips, with T-score and Z-score comparison

Fat mass index & lean mass index — normalised to height for meaningful comparison

Android-to-gynoid fat ratio — a key cardiovascular risk marker

Common Questions

DEXA is the technology used for bone density assessment — but our body composition DEXA does much more than a standard bone density test. It provides a complete picture of your body's composition: fat mass, lean mass, and bone mineral density across the whole body and by region.

Yes — DEXA uses a very small dose of low-energy X-ray. The exposure is comparable to approximately 3 hours of natural background radiation — far less than a chest X-ray or CT scan. It is generally considered very safe for adults, though it is not recommended during pregnancy.

For body composition monitoring, most practitioners recommend rescanning every 3–6 months if actively training or modifying diet, or annually for general health surveillance. Your clinician will advise based on your goals.
